Ginza 6 Opening Event Photos

I had a chance to attend the pre opening part for the new Ginza 6 building in Tokyo. It’s the lastest high end fashion icon in Ginza. The building was truly beautiful inside & out.

Congrats J-Seed for New Japanese incubator Venture Generation

Last night I went to the launch party for J-Seed’s new incubator Venture Generation in Ginza.

http://www.j-seed.com/news/2012/02/venture-generation.html

Tokyo, Japan, February 8, 2012 – (JCN Newswire) – J-Seed Ventures, Inc. announced plans to support the entrepreneurial community in Tokyo with the March launch of “Venture Generation,” a start-up incubator targeting early-stage Japanese ventures and foreign companies entering the Japanese market.  Located in central Tokyo near Tokyo Station, Venture Generation was specifically designed to support entrepreneurs in Japan by offering a platform from which these companies can achieve their growth goals much faster than they would on their own.
First, Venture Generation is a co-working office environment, providing space at low monthly cost for companies that do not yet have significant cash flow or which are trying to minimize their start-up costs.  The facility has dedicated, furnished workstations, meeting rooms, Wi-Fi, and office equipment.  The central location will allow companies convenient access to Tokyo’s main business districts.  Companies within the Venture Generation incubator also have the advantage that they can scale flexibly since seating spaces can increase incrementally while they are growing.  This flexibility and the short-term contracts enable members to concentrate on building and driving their business.
It was a good crowd & I even ran into someone who based some of his company development off of my previous work. That’s really inspirational.
I also caught up with the WIXI gang & had a few with them, they always have quite a few new things coming up as they expand the market.
Congrats Jeff, Yoneyama  San & of course my Kohai Ryo. Keep expanding the venture market of Japan. I came from a J-Seed company so I’ll always support what J-Seed does.

Drupal user Group in Tokyo sponsored by WIXI wPix

I had a chance to hang out with some of the WIXI team on Tuesday night in Takadanobaba. WIXI sponsored an informal meetup for Drupal developers which I found to be a very good move. Even though WIXI owns the current largest parking service in Japan Darshaun & Steve hasn’t forgotten what domains are for: developing into useful sites for users.

A good 30 or so people came out in the Bar Lamp in Takadanobaba. The crowd was a bit of a good mix between non Japanese & Japanese developers. I don’t think it had the purpose of sparking any serious business just a casual fun get-together drinking beer & all you can eat Tacos.

As always me & Darshaun always speak frankly on what’s going on in domaining in Japan. We both see it as “domains” not IDN, dot even just dot jp. Domains that can be used by Japanese companies.  Good to hear about some of the new & up& coming things WIXI has. Even beforehand the event I contact them for about a few expanding the market surprises they had going on. All in All WIXI is a great team that is adding value to the domain market of Japan. There’s quite a lot still coming from them I can’t even hint to what they are.

Thank You Lamp for extending the all you can eat & drink by 40 minutes. I’m sure everyone will return to have a drink or two in Baba.

WIXI becomes sponsor of Agency Night: Tokyo

Tomorrow night’s Agency Night has added WIXI Japan’t first public domain parking service as a sponsor of the event. The team at WIXI have been adding new services & I thought it would be good for them to network with more of the Ad Industry in Japan & make personal connections. This way we all can shape the domain industry in Japan together.

Agency Night is tomorrow night in Shibuya

Looking at ccTLDs from both sides & .com

I have started to invest in .jps looking at the market as a resident of Tokyo, Japan.  My daily life is mostly speaking Japanese with staff at work, friends, & speaking English with clients overseas & friends in Tokyo. I have been around Japanese people for about 20 years & look at the Japanese market like Japanese people do.

I can’t talk about every single ccTLD but I read a lot of people write about ccTLDs in IDNs being risk & .com isn’t. Unfortunately lately with the WikiLeaks scandal & the BitTorrent sites you have to realize .com holds risk too. For a user in China having a .com & running a movie site this domain can be taken away from them & recently this has happened. It may not be illegal for the location of the domain registrant but the US has taken away domains anyway.

I’d rather take the risk. The average business owner in China for example will have a business license & conduct business legaly in China. This is what you should be looking at. This business owner is going to pick what best suits his customer. He/She won’t care if the governmaent took away some porn or adult names. Especially if they were taken away from nonChinese nationals. This will not affect the mindset of the bulk of the people registering these domains.

I don’t want to get you to think one is better than the other. I invested in both .com IDNs & .jp IDNs. I have sites with good traffic on both extensions currently a few at over 200 unique a day. I just like to try to get you to see things for the way they are on both sides. I personally don’t write about dot com going to IDN because I’ll wait till Verisign promotes it. Currently they seem very much in the planning & figuring it out stage but IDN sites promotes these quotes like it’s set in stone. IDN investors have been saying “It’s coming next week” for a lot of things for years. Take advantage of your portfolio now & try to make income of of it. This WAS my reason for being a part of the IDN community.

Have a good day if anyone is in Tokyo during the third week of December next Agency Night will be December 15th. It’s turning out to be a really good industry event.

IDN Event 2010

Later this month there will be one of the first organized public IDN events in NYC.

IDN Event

The event has a full course of activities that would cater to a range of guest the IDN investor to the domainer that maybe curious about international markets. Living in the States it’s not easy to clearly see the potential for international opportunities. The low price of $99 which to those in Manhattan is a night out is a really fair admission price.

Panel Guest include Elliot Silver speaking about development
Patrick Carleton from Associated Cities talking about Geo IDNs
& Edmon Chung from DotAsia speaking about the need for IDNs.

There will also be an auction with quite a good amount of quality IDNs.

Unfortunately I’ll be in Tokyo but here’s the full info & have fun.

IDN Event – Oct 30, 2010 in New York, NY

Discuss IDNs with an intimate group of leading domainers while enjoying a sushi dinner, which is complimentary with ticket purchase. Haru offers a beautiful private dining experience for our attendees in the heart of Manhattan.

Agency Night: Tokyo

I realize we all have some of the same goals with different ways of doing it.

I’m having my Agency Night event tomorrow night in Shibuya again.
If any of the readers here are in Tokyo please stop by.
Even though it’s not an IDN event it does give a chance for those in advertising to hear first hand about the use of IDNs.
It’s not what I mainly talk about but it does come up.
It also might be a small turnout 40 to 50 people but most are working for some of the world’s biggest agencies.
Dentsu, Hakuhodo, Mindshare, MediaCom, Olgilvy, JWT, Beacon, Proximity, & Wunderman Group.

It’s these guys & gerls that pitch the ideas to clients for Japan.

Here’s the info
